The Standards and Training Division exists to provide instruction and mentoring for deputy sheriffs and detention officers to assure optimum performance, effectiveness, and departmental productivity as Cook County Sheriff's Officers. Additionally, the unit has the responsibility of developing criteria to ensure new employees the highest probability of success. This Division is also charged with the responsibility of developing a comprehensive training program that perpetuates maximum effectiveness and efficiency. These programs include, but are not limited to, addressing the physical, intellectual, emotional, legal and ethical demands imposed upon Sheriffs Office personnel.
Training today's professional law enforcement officer has often been cited as the most important responsibility of any law enforcement agency. With this in mind, the Training Division is committed to providing the most comprehensive and advanced Law Enforcement curriculum possible. This is accomplished by the development and delivery of real world training provided both in house and through the Georgia Public Safety Training Center. The Cook County Sheriff's Office utilizes a "state of the art" Law Enforcement Training Facility to accentuate all aspects of training in order to produce well-trained, professional public safety officers to better serve our community. Proper training provides personnel with the most important tools of their career, providing the ability to act decisively and correctly in a wide spectrum of situations. The Standards and Training Division's goal is to provide proactive job specific training that will:
- Improve job performance and proficiency through effective and efficient training
- Meet or exceed all of Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) requirements
- Improve the quality of education by training with organizational goals in mind Insure the Sheriffs Office mandates and mission are clearly understood
The Cook County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Training Facility is equipped with both indoor and outdoor classroom settings. The facility also offers a variety of ranges for law enforcement firearm training to include ten double target lanes equipped with air controlled turning targets and a 25 yard static target line. Currently the facility utilizes a 25-yard pistol range, 50-yard shotgun range, and a 100-yard rifle range complemented by steel reactive targets. The facility boasts a "shoot house" designed with a changeable floor plan for scenario based training. It also has a vast area utilized for defensive tactics, vehicle maneuvers, less lethal projectiles, and specialized weapons and tactical training which includes a 35-foot observation and rappelling tower.
The function of the Training Division is to provide and coordinate the training for all personnel. This training includes, but is not limited to:
- New Officer Training
- Field Training
- In-Service training
- Firearms training
- Specialized training
- Deliver training and assistance for numerous agencies throughout South Georgia as well as providing facility usage for agencies such as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia State Patrol SWAT Team, and the United States Air Force Special Operations.
The Cook County Sheriffs Office Standards and Training Division is comprised of experienced, professional, POST certified instructors recognized by the Georgia Public Safety Training Center and is augmented by associate and guest instructors.
